No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
