The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
